For over forty years, UNICEF has been working to provide sources of clean water, adequate sanitation facilities, and hygiene programs to children in more than 80 countries around the world. </p>
<p>The UNICEF Tap Project is an annual campaign that raises funds for these efforts. During World Water Week, patrons of participating restaurants around the world are asked to donate $1 for a glass of tap water they normally drink for free.</p>
<p>In 2009, we were selected by UNICEF launch the Tap Project for the first time in Hawaii.</p>
<p><strong>Process</strong><br />
We were tasked with not only developing the marketing campaign for the Tap Project in Hawaii; we were required to manage the entire project. We developed a communication strategy and action plan to recruit restaurants and volunteers for the campaign, as well as build awareness for the project. We also secured media and other in kind donations, and then launched an integrated statewide marketing campaign and education program for local schools.</p>
<p><strong>Solution</strong><br />
The Tap Project Hawaii campaign was a two-phase process. In phase one we recruited restaurants to participate in the Tap Project, as well as trained their management and wait staff as to the campaign’s importance, what to expect and how to respond to questions and inquiries. </p>
<p>Then, in phase two, we launched an integrated marketing campaign, which directed people to dine at the participating Tap Project restaurants. The campaign included the creation of print, TV and radio ads, as well as non-traditional tactics. We also developed and implemented a social media strategy and a local Tap Project website. Our public relations efforts resulted in exposure in local media channels including the Honolulu Advertiser, Star Bulletin, Hawaii News Now, Midweek, Honolulu Weekly, and various local radio stations. We also engaged local schools by visiting classes, explaining the importance of clean water to students, and providing teachers with lesson plans to integrate into their curriculum.</p>

<p><strong>Results</strong><br />
In 2009, through our efforts, participating restaurants, schools and other volunteers, were able to raise enough funds to provide 8,400 children with 40 days of clean water. Our local contributions helped UNICEF raise nearly $1 million on a national level. In 2010, despite a challenging economy, we were able to increase Hawaii donations by 20%.</p>

<p>Results<br />
The Wedding Café has seen unbelievable growth and success over the last three years. Their vendor membership has increased by 20%, and their bride membership has grown by 40%. Their monthly workshop attendance has climbed from 90 to 175 attendees, and their staff has grown from 3 to 15. Their revenue has increased by 383% since 2008.</p>
